Affiliate marketing is defined as a business relationship with a group, company or organization that allow you to link to their business with the sole aim of gaining some commission or percentage of what you sell for them. The percentage differs from companies/organizations and the form of payments also differs.
There are many different types of affiliate marketing programs. There are those that offer one time commissions off sale, some might offer a life time commission (recurring) and others may pay just for leads that you can get them. So, it all depends on you. However, there are something’s you need to know before embarking on any program.
(1) Research on the product: The first golden rule of any business is to identify the demand. With affiliate marketing program you will likely be giving a range of product to sell. Check out the demand of these products. Stay away from trendy items. They will sell like mad one minute, and the next you will be giving them away. Look for things that people want and need, that you will stay in the business.
(2) Choice of affiliate program: The type of affiliate program you chose to have is completely up to the person that owns the business. They decide the percentage or the flat rate they are willing to pay for a sale or lead. So it is good you read their terms and conditions before signing up. Choosing the affiliate marketing programs that you want to go with is not hard to do at all. Choose something that you know about and that you can be known as an expert about. The more passionate you are about the service or product, the better, as it will shine through.
(3) Cost: After finding companies that you are interested in then check the start up cost. These should be minimal if any at all. Ask questions such as; if there is a way to pay back the start up costs through your sales commission. Most are willing to do this. However, if there seems to be a lot of initial money that needs to be paid by you then find something else. Also ask what support you will receive if you agree to become part of their affiliate marketing plan.
(4) Multiple products: Do not limit yourself to just one product only. Try to offer variety of things. Many affiliate marketing programs offer a selection and it is best to go with these. Basing your business on one product may work in the short term. However, someone will eventually come along with something better and cheaper.
(5) Be unique: You need to establish what makes you and what you offer better than others. What do you offer that sets you apart from other businesses.
(6) Be consistent and efficient: Do your best to ensure fast and efficient service to your customers. Send information to them on current trends. Though sometimes you may fail them, let them know what is happening and be ready to compensate them.
(7) Keep your customers smiling: The happier your customers are the more likely they are to come back. Offer your customer incentives such as savings on their next purchase. It may cost you more but in the short term. Making them happy will result in them referring you to others.
Affiliate marketing is something that takes work. You cannot just set up your site and let it go. You have to work on it consistently to see a good amount of revenue come from it. However,,make sure that you are doing everything that you can to get it seen.
